We have all used gaffer's tape or simply "gaff" during our shows. The term "gaffer" was revealed to me by our brothers in the motion picture industry unions.
Rigging practices were essentially taken from sailing ships, where a "gaff" was sometimes used to move ropes, pulleys, etc. in the overhead positions on sailing ships. This translated to the Hollywood movie sets where the lighting technicians were using "gaffs" to move their lighting instruments around in the rigging overhead. Thus came the term "gaffer", the guy with long stick in his hand, haha.
