: I've contacted the House Ear Institute for some material to put in the Study Hall regarding hearing conservation.

good, I hope you point them to the posts on this subject in the thread below to answer the questions raised by Tom Danley and others in regards to our premise.

I also ask that David Schierman of JBL weigh in on the subject.
Those of you who have attended the Concert Sound Reinforcement Seminars and have your notebooks might have a copy of his: HOW LOUD IS TOO LOUD? AN OVERIEW OF TOURING CONCERT SOUND SYSTEMS AND LIKELY FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS
(developed for the 1989 International Conference on Noise Control Engineering)
when David was with Concert Sound Consultants
In this document David states:
" Another trend will be the continuing improvement of low-bass systems, and development of a better understanding of how to use the lowest part of the audio spectrum for emotional impact. Thus the overall electrical power requirements for these systems will continue to rise. At high SPL's the lowest frequencies require roughly 100 times the energy needed to sound as loud as the mid-high frequencies."
ref Mark Engebretson's guest editorial More comes to M.O.R. Rec Engr Producer May 1989
" The improvement of low-bass systems could mean that the sound of live shows can be leveled off at present volume levels yet still offer a dynamic sense of excitement that meets audience expectations. For this trend to move in the most healthful and manageable direction will require the application of creative educational programs for sound mixers and system operators."
