: Hey everyone,
: I thought it would be kind of fun to read about some of the crazy antics that happens on stage. I'll leave a couple stories and maybe post some more later on.
My favorite one was from the 1977 Reno Jazz festival. Seems the crew doing setup thoughtlessly plugged both bass and guitar amps into a light Triac controlled outlet without any clue they had done so. Well.. you know how a BIIGG reactive transformer and a triac react to each other.. About 2 hours and 6 bands later, both amps erupted at the same time. One amp started smoking, and the other actually had flames coming out the back. PANIC erupted amongst the staff as they tried to put out this mess. To their credit, that band kept playing while all this was going on, without missing a beat. Not bad for a bunch of high schoolers, IMO.. I still laugh thinking about that whole incident. I've NEVER seen a sound guy leap over his console before to get to the stage...
Story number 2 was pathetic - but crazy. B - rate pop vocalist was trying to get the audience to interact with what she was doing (was that supposed to be singing?), and all of a sudden runs upstage, grabs a BIG bag, and starts handing out kazoos to all the audience members - even got all the way back to me at the sound board - almost stuffs it in my mouth. PR person for the venue gets amused and gets a shot of me sitting at the console mixing this "show" with a kazoo in my mouth. Not sure who was crazier here - me for humoring her, or her doing this. The only consolation to this embarrassment was seeing the looks of disbelief on the various audience members as this vocalist handed them a kazoo..
Regards,
Mike (see, soundpeople CAN do more than just do sound..) Allen
