: Mr. 'Ster-

: With current analysis tools and powerful and inexpensive DSP, 1/3 octave eq's are are pretty harsh tool to apply. Now I'm not predicting that they'll go away,(see "paperless office"),but that their value will be reduced to that of a general voicing tool, rather than anything corrective.

: In a properly set-up rig I'd be reaching for the strip eq (quasi-parametric typ.) on the offending channel, rather than blunt-force traumatizing the individual mix.

: That said, I'd be more comfy with a variable inflection type filter - old KT or UREI style. Best wishes on the shoot-out.

I don;t know in which world you live, but as Bink mentioned the monitor application, these things are NOT going away for the next 5 years. Maybe yes for all-inear setups and maybe yes for all digitally controlled monitor applications with the same desks each night, but certainly not for the majority of professional festival setups that our species wrestles through each summer.
Although I'm in for a lot of digital applications, graphic equalisers are the the right tool for monitor applications for traveling ME's and the majority of the traveling acts. A digital counterpart of course would be OK. (TC, I'm still waiting for the EQ-station to demo, including fader remote.)

Desk decisions like "we don;t need these any longer because we have a new tool" fall in the category "line arrays take over the entire market" and "SM58 is old technology, you shouldn't use it anymore". The wisdom of the road is how to make a show happen good and consistent, not about what is the theoretical best way to do it right now seen from an ideal world point of view.
