: We've all learned mixing monitors on 2408M's or worse. Because of their crapppy eq we tended to fix everything - including the frequency response, flabby stages, etc. - with the graphic. This is fine in small "ME LOUD" situations, but it doesn't translate well into more elaborate productions. These are better addressed with wedges optimized for frequency and time through a DSP (Soundweb, Crown PIP3, etc). These make it faster to "match" wedges as a baseline. The variables of mic/performer should be addressed at the channel strip. It isn't necessary for a performer to hear everything in a mix choked through an eq curve for a 58. The eq choices on the strip are typically better suited for this correction. Most of the large formant consoles today allow different Q across different passbands, a useful option not available on graphics.

: I'm not saying sayonara to graphics, however. When it comes to the final safety net - the graphic, I believe that older style "the more you cut the wider it gets" filters are appropriate in situations where speed counts more than elegance e.g. you've been bitten on the arse by something you didn't see coming.

I must say that there are days where I leave the graphics flat. Good floors, good desk. (H3000 with Synco co-axials is nice) A touch or 3 is the max then, just to make up for some stage / room / mic resonances. On the worse dates I need 7 bands to touch. The problem is that the people believing you don't need graphics because their wedges are "flat" need them the most. For pro-applications a 31-band EQ for each mix is a must have. I would be happy to leave them untouched if I really get it loud enough without it, but that happens twice per year?
The provider doesn;t know whether I'm hired to get the very soft singer above the band or that I walk in with a richer band just to maintain consistency.

I believe in asymmetrical filters the most (Audient). Or the narrow mode of BSS FDS 960. But I keep meeting colleagues who are not able to cut the right frequencies. For the your choice would be better, indeed.
