: ... However at this point I can't get very excited about even a positive outcome. Graphic EQs are mature (read obsolete) technology. Feedback killers will get better and in-ear monitors cheaper to the point where 1/3 octaves will become moot. Of course somebody will sell a few between now and then :-)
What you say is certainly true, John. The 31-band is mature, yes, but folks in the trenches will be using them for at least another decade, if not longer.
The next step may well be a 31-band that includes notch filtering to some degree. There are several models like this available already.
I've always wondered why a mfr never implemented a graphic wherein the ISO centers were sweepable to a degree. A layout like that would confuse a bunch of users but could be quite effective in the right hands.
As far as automatic feedback killers go, an offline note to me asked specifically whether or not the playing field would be leveled by defeating the feedback killing mechanisms of those GEQs which include notch filtering of some sort. My answer is NO, definitely not. I intend to measure both the defeated, straight graphic mode and measure the effect of notch filters as adjusted either automatically or by a skilled operator to increase GBF as much as possible. I think if you are comparing two tools that are intended for the same job you should allow each tool room to show you how well it can tackle the job, even if one tool has many more features. Doing the job in the best way possible is what matters most, not the preservation of previous solutions as applied to that job. I'm not married to the status quo.
You say 'well-executed shootouts' and I say 'we'll see.' This is my first stab at a real-world application of the scientific method. I have expert help, though, and I'm not afraid to listen to good advice. What I'm most excited about is a chance to lay down a solid path for further explorations of the user base taking gear tests into their own hands. Graphic EQs were the low-hanging fruit, as it were.
Thanks again -
